The fall season is a beautiful time to visit the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. All around the city of Knoxville, there are many ways to celebrate the harvest season. Festivals take place throughout the Smoky Mountains such as the Foothills Fall Festival, the East Tennessee Chili Cook-Off, Tennessee Fall Homecoming, and the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival. The Foothills Fall Festival takes place in Maryville, Tennessee, just down the road from Knoxville. It is a three day festival. For over ten years, this annual event has featured delicious southern cooking, legendary country & bluegrass music, and plenty of entertainment for the entire family. This year, Reba McIntyre is headlining the event, along with other class acts such as Sara Evans, Chicago, Steel Magnolia, The Band Perry, and more. Past acts have included Billy Ray Cyrus, Big & Rich, Alabama, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. A juried Arts & Crafts Festival features some of the best local work in the area. Many areas of the festival are free, while many of the bigger concerts due require tickets.
Living Harvest
The annual East Tennessee Chili Cook-off can be found directly in Knoxville at the World's Fair Park Festival Lawn. This year will be the 6th annual event. Forty teams compete against each other, while raising money for Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. A Fun Zone for children, live music, and delicious taste-testing guarantees fun for everyone involved. Awards are given in numerous categories, but one of the most sought-after is the Audience Choice Award. That award is determined by the nearly 4,000 people who attend every year and vote on their favorite chili after tasting all they can eat!
Just twenty minutes outside of Knoxville, visitors and residents alike can take part in the Tennessee Fall Homecoming at the Museum of Appalachia. Another three day festival, this one features five stages with over 400 musical acts, local arts & crafts, savory southern cooking, and various demonstrations. The main types of music showcased here are Gospel, Bluegrass, and Traditional Mountain Folk. All proceeds benefit the Museum of Appalachia's cause to preserve the heritage as well as culture of Appalachia. This festival is opened to the public and gates open early for those interested in enjoying some hot coffee and biscuits before the festivities begin. Included in your admission, is a tour of this historic museum.
The Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival, focused mainly around the Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville areas of Tennessee, just outside of Knoxville. This festival begins in mid-September each year and runs all the way until Halloween! Various activities and events take place each day of the festival, all around town. Part of this festival includes the Fall Ford Truck Fest, which is a truck show, as well as a family spot for games and contests! Also featured during the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival is the annual Heritage Day in Pigeon Forge, trout fishing competitions, craft fairs, and tons of concerts! The Harvest Festival is a great way to see the Knoxville area, while getting a feel for the beautiful autumn colors of the Smoky Mountains, the famous music, and delicious food of the area.
